Stickman
email Interview – Dec 2023

Once described as 'the most exciting thing to come out of Llanelli since the 1911 railway strike', Stickman are an an incredible blur of noise, excitement, energy and fun. They describe themselves as 'fun loving disco punks', and their joyously chaotic live performances allied with their ear for a killer tune have seen them join forces with Criminal Records for the release of their highly rated and much enjoyed debut album, 'Cyanide Smile'.

We decided it was time to ask them about punka life in a Digital Age...

* Stickman – who, what and why?
Stickman started way back in the early 2000`s punk rock scene, from signing with the
legendary Swansea label “Mighty Atom Records” hitting a UK tour then prematurely
imploding and breaking up, It just wasn’t our time.

Fast forward 20 years with a “one off” reunion show in mind, two new band members -
Daz – Bass/Vocals - Paul – Drums joined the fold. After the recording of 3 new singles which Resulted in airplay with BBC Introducing, A Mini Tour, Signing with “Criminal Records” and the release of our Debut Album “Cyanide Smile”.

Now seems to be the right time.

* Describe your sound to a tone deaf stick man.
Chaotic fusion of punk, pop, rock, alternative, disco beating rhythms with a sprinkle of
love and colour.

* Tell us a bit about your debut album, and its reception.
Our debut album has been recorded as a collective of tracks over the last 4 years during
several sessions at Mwnci Studios working with the brilliant Jethro Chaplin.
It’s still only 2 weeks old but we have had a huge increase in streaming plays and had a lot
of radio play globally which is bonkers.
I’m pretty sure the listeners love the album as much as we do.

* How did the link up with Criminal Records come about?
We were offered a local support slot with the band “The Kut” as part of independent music venue trust where we met Princess Maha who runs the label. Shortly after that show Criminal Records offered us to work with them in future releases, and here we are over a year later with the release of our album “Cyanide Smile”

* Who has a cyanide smile?
Not that we intended to get political but have a have a guess? I’m sure you already know.

* You are keen to play Love Music Hate Racism gigs – do you think music / art can make a
difference to the so called real world?

We find that music is a raw emotion and makes people feel real emotions and brings people together, it takes us all to a place where real world politics have no place, total inclusivity, peace and love.

* You dress up for gigs. Why is it important for you to make this effort?

Dressing up is fricking fun!
We are not your stereotypical band, we do not follow trends, we are what we are, we have stuck by this ethos and will continue to do it this way.
We certainly stand out and it sends a message that you can wear whatever you choose to wear; Let the haters hate.

* Would you rather be always overdressed or always underdressed for every occasion?
Overdressed Duh!

* How important is age in rock'n'roll?
I think age is irrelevant in rock and roll in terms of musicianship or showmanship.
I think most musicians tend to start as a youngster and develop from there.
Rock and roll is for whoever wants to be a part of it no matter how old or young.
We have aged like a fine wine.

* Would you rather always have to sing instead of speaking or dance everywhere you go?
Damo & Rich dance everywhere for sure, for health and safety reasons Adz & Daz keep to the singing. Paul – Don’t think we have ever heard him Sing, Dance or even speak?

* You're playing for us at Elysium on Dec 16th; what is the Stickman live experience like?
Yes we are really looking forward to this show.
We love to bring the party to our live shows, We encourage dancing and love to get amongst the crowd, sometimes we bring some good old party favourites like balloons and party poppers, we just enjoy playing so much the crowd feed off our energy.

* Would you rather have a rewind button or a pause button in your life?
I would say a pause button, live in the best moments repeatedly if it works like that?

* I recently described you as the most exciting thing to come out of Llanelli since the 1911
railway strike; what are the best and worst parts of your home town? How has it influenced
your music?

Thanks for the comparison
Like any place there are good and bad points, all of us except one have spent time growing up in Llanelli, good times and sadly not so good times. But Llanelli is a part of us and is where the Stickman journey began many moons ago.

* Are a lot of the songs on Cyanide Smile about people and places you know?
Not really most of our songs are about people or places that are fictional but based on true events if that makes sense.

* If you could join a 5 band festival line up, which other 4 bands (alive or dead) would you
like to add to the bill?

Adz – Bros
Damo – Nirvana
Rich – Fugazi
Daz - Gogol Bordello
Paul – Ozzy Ozbourne

* How can our readers hear your sounds, and why should they bother?
All the usual streaming sites is the easy way.
You can purchase our physical album through the Criminal Records store here and buy the download also.
We encourage all the readers to give Stickman a listen and then come to a show for the full Experience.

* Finally and most importantly, what's best – chips or cream buns?
We have a vegan in the camp.
Let’s just go for Chips… saves Arguments.
