Bad Shout
email interview Dec 2023

Some things are clearly just meant to be.

From the first time I heard them on Adam Walton's trail blazing Radio Wales show, Bad Shout's tunes, energy, enthusiasm and fun have never been far from my imagination. I then made it my mission to see them live, then release their music, wear the badges and spread the word. And every step has been better than the one before. And every time I hear them live or on flexi, cassette or on our lovely new multicoloured vinyl, I can't stop a massive infectious ridiculous grin spreading across my face. Proof that music can make the world a better place.

To be more prosaic, Bad Shout are a 3 piece Punk band based in Cardiff. Formed in April 2022, influences range from classic 77 punk to DC hardcore and garage rock bands including the Buzzcocks, The Damned, Stiff Little Fingers, Black Flag, The Black Lips, Jay Reatard, The Chats and more. Frenetic riffing, snapping vocals, hard hitting sweaty drums and a feeling it could all fall apart at any second make for a deafening, exciting, frenetic live show – At The Drive In being Pulled Apart by Horses.

After releasing their debut vinyl single, a flexi and now the tracks on our Leeks and Beats 12" vinyl, we thought it was time to ask Bad Shout for some anecdotes...

* Bad Shout – who, what and why?
Callum, Nathan and Emma. We're a 3 piece punk band based in Cardiff.

* Describe your sound to a drunk politician
77 punk mixed with DC hardcore and 60s garage rock.

* You've recently received a fair bit of notice and some great reviews – why do you think this is and how does it make you feel?
That's very kind! I don't know! We're lucky to work with local Swansea zines such as Nerve Endings and ABACB who everyone should check out!

*Leeks or beets, leaks or beats!?
Leeks and beets baby!

* What do you listen to when driving?
Nation Radio.

* Do you feel there is a new life in the Cardiff / South Wales music scene, and are you part of this?
We've been very lucky to work with R*E*P*E*A*T Records in Swansea for the past year. There's definitely some great bands from South Wales that everyone should be listening to (Kikker, Monet, Pseudo Cool, The Shunkos, Pink Welis, Tenby Lacrosse Club, OFAC, Shlug) but we're not part of any scenes, so I couldn't tell you!

* Tell us a bit about the tracks on Leeks and Beets.
Sure! We've got 5 tracks on the album. Big in Tech is written about the worst kind of people you meet at parties, Finger Trap is about fighting your own self doubts, Took me a minute is a toxic love song and Just on Time is about finding your way through a tough spot to reach a better place. Lost on the High Street is a trashy bonus track I wrote when I was 16 about getting drunk and staring into space!

* What do you hope the record might achieve for you?
A nice Christmas present for my Mum.

* You're launching the album on December 16th at Elysium; what is the Bad Shout Live experience like?
Blood, sweat and tears! Come see for yourself!

* Would you rather live in a world without music or a world without books?
No books!

* Are you really “unhinged in all the best ways”? (Adam Walton)
I'm afraid not. We're just regular guys living the dream!

* If you could join a 5 band festival line up, which other 4 bands (alive or dead) would you like to add to the bill?
Great question! MC5, The Buzzcocks, Black Flag and Jay Reatard!
* Great answer!

* Apart from on Leeks and Beets, how else can our readers hear your sounds, and why should they bother?
We've got cassettes, vinyls, stickers, pins, t shirts. They shouldn't! Go get a job!

* Finally and most importantly, what's best – chips or cream buns?
Nathan and Emma go for chips but I'll have a cream bun please!
