'Not the Coronation' and birthday party

Not many 58 year olds get a birthday party as exciting as this. Not many 58 year olds get bands as cutting edge, wildly exciting, ridiculously brilliant and totally off the wall fantastic as Monet to play them. Ones recently described as everyone's new favourite band.

Watching Monet live is a bit like watching a car crash disaster reel on Insta, you keep waiting for everything to implode and fall apart and grind to a shuddering messy halt, only it never quite does. The shaky speakers look as if they're about to be mown down, the guitars appear to heading into a head-on smash and the cymbals look dangerously like decapitating the transfixed but be-bopping crowd. And yet the strength of the songs and the pandemoniac professionalism of the performance somehow hold everything together. Beneath the aural chaos and stage shenanigans, there lurks pure pop brilliance, its heart beating like a troll under a collapsing bridge. The pulsing funky punky bass and ridiculously imaginative but assured drums power and scaffold the whole edifice, allowing the guitars and voices to canter off into various sunsets, before returning to the stable when reluctantly reined back in. Before escaping once more on another imaginative, unexpected and jaw dropping break for freedom.

I once described Monet as like Rage Against the Machine standing in for Cud, and their cover of Cud covering Hot Chocolate shows that I am, of course, right. But it is the sheer joyful energetic pop genius of current single Wallace that truly showcases the way the band works, melody and grooving syncopation swathed in caustic riffs and surreal screaming, hugging a top tune and holding together a tottering structure of noise and joy.

If you've not done so yet (and why not?), go and see Monet live. You'll thank me for it, though you'll never be the same again. Your new favourite band? Of course. But I doubt they'll play your 58th birthday party...

MOnet's track Back to Ponty appears on our latest flexi here, but this self interest doesn't negate any of what I've written above!
