The Jesus and Mary Chain – Glasgow Eyes

The Jesus and Mary Chain have famously made a name for themselves by being cantankerous, bloody minded and unpredictable.

Whether this be in the dentist drill thrill of the early singles and Psycho Candy, the shiny poisoned perfect pop of Darklands, the electo-beat surf swagger of Automatic or their numerous other Barbed Wire Kisses, they excel in flooring us with an unexpected upper cut to the ear drums.

Happily, Glasgow Eyes provides another such aural assault.

Who’d have predicted that the guitar’s six Silver Strings would be replaced by subversive and sibilant synths as the main mode of attack, and who’d have thought it’d have worked so well? Old school keyboards abused by modern tech to create a squall of electronics, underpinned by sequenced drums and punctuated by guitars, all amplifying the trademark Scottish dirty drawl of the brothers' laconic laden vocals.

But what we could have foreseen is the quality of the song writing: the JAMC staples of longing and loss, sorrow and sleaze, death and desire, all lovingly packaged in perfect pop songs, memorable melancholic melodies and an undiminished of love of rock’n’roll.

R*E*P*E*A*T is nearly 30 years old and don't I know how hard it is to continue always to be creative, inspired and exciting.

40 years on and the Reid brothers show us all how it’s done.
