Everyday Robots is former Blur and Gorillaz singer Damon Albarn’s first full blown solo studio album. It is a diverse collection of 12 tracks, seldom uplifting but beautifully crafted and at times haunting. Some of the multi-layered musical arrangements are almost overpowering, but just subtle enough to make you want to take another listen. The standout is the title track, an insight into how technology makes our everyday lives more impersonal.
The most upbeat is Mr Tembo, a song about a baby elephant which features The Leytonstone City Mission Choir and was released as a US-only single. It’s a thoughtful album, very personal and reflective, a world away from Britpop. It’s definitely not background music, being too interesting and too demanding of attention.
